What is oil refinery

Oil refinery plant refers to a series of refining processes that can remove phospholipids, FFA, pigment, off-flavor and other impurities in the oil. Edible oil refinery or vegetable oil refinery is essential to ensure removal of gums, waxes, phosphatides and free fatty acid (F. F.A.) from the oil. To impart uniform colur by removal of coloring pigments and to get rid of unpleasant smell from the oil by removal of odiferous matter.

Main process of oil refinery

Oil refinery plant usually includes the following sections: Degumming, Neutralization, Bleaching, Dewaxing and Deodorization.

Oil degumming : Oil degumming is the first step in an oil refinery plant and is key to the vegetable oil refining process. Oil degumming is performed in two ways: hydration oil degumming and special oil degumming.

Hydration oil degumming involves the addition of hot water since impurities like phospholipids, gums and proteings are soluable in oil but insoluable in water. In this way, the impurities can be separated. The separated gum (once dry) can be made into lecithin or added into cakes or meals. Hydration degumming improves the oil's edibility and storage potential

Oil neutralization :Oil neutralization is another step in the edible oil refining process. Oil neutralization is also known as deacidification. It neutralizes fatty free acids in the oil using caustic soda (NaOh), The reaction produces soaps which are separated from the oil . Because trace amount of soaps remain in the oil , the oil is either washed with water or treated with silica . thereby converting the acids into soaps. These soaps are easily removed by decantation or by centrifugal force

Oil bleaching :Oil bleaching is carried out before deodorization in an edible oil refinery. The process removes color, as well as residual phosphatides, metals and soaps. To do this, clay is added to the oil then heated, upon which it absorbs pigmentation. Lastly, the oil-clay mixture is filtered and the spent cake is dried to remove the oil./ Clay adsorb the color pigments . the clay is filtered and the clean bleached oil is stored for further process

Oil deodorization :Oil deodorization is the final stage in an edible oil refinery. It creates a more bland oil by removing odiferous material and other minor undesired particles, in turn increasing its shelf life.

Further De-waxing processing is needed if it is crude sunflower seed oil, crude rice bran oil, crude corn germ oil, crude coconut, crude palm oil, crude palm kernel oil.

1. Decoloring tank: bleach pigments from oil.

2. Deodorizing tank: remove the un-favored smell from decolorized oil.

3. Oil furnace: provide enough heat for the refining sections which need high temperature of 280℃.
